Hey fellow halftrackers,
Anyone known the weight of the 160 AX? I need to pull the engine from our halftrack this winter, just trying to put a plan together. We no longer have the crawler loader that we used to put the engine in, plus it was a bare frame at that time. I'm considering using a cherry picker this time. Any thoughts are welcome.

I used my 763 bobcat to drop mine in without tranny and it lifted rear wheels of ground at times

The engine weighs between 1000 and 1500 depending on how much od the accessories you leave on. I don't recommend a cherry picker for this one.

It can be done with a cherry picker, but I was very very careful and had no accessories installed. Basically block/valvetrain/crank/pistons/rods. I also lowered the frame by removing the wheels to keep from having to lift it very high. That was nervous transition...

I used the engine hoist in the photo with no problems.  I also used two I-bolts in the block when i pulled it because i didn't trust just one.

Make sure you remove the oil pan armor.  I didn't think i needed to, even though the TM said to, and you'll see that the oil pan will hit it and won't let you pull it out all the way.

I found out the hard way how heavy it was. I used my old Harbor freight lift. Got the engine over the frame and started to pull it clear when the right leg folded and rolled over. Engine hit the drive way and took a chunk out of the cement and split the bell housing into 2 pieces. Glad I wasn't planing to use the engine but still made me sad.  That was just the block and rotating assembly. no head, pan or accessory.

One thing I did in the past on heavy lifts like this, for safety reasons, was hired a tow truck to come out. They were able to extend their boom and raise it high enough to lift a truck cab off the frame. Worked great and didn't cost to much. This would be a great job for that.

I hope  to pic up a engine soon , and need to know if it fits into my Volkswagen T4 Transporter. But I can only load 700kg into it , so  this would be a littel  less  Reserve. So I Think it is better to use a Trailer with it...

IT is one, that is like the baiv  ones, but not from them . A french rebuild one. They are out here in Europe in good numbers...
