rear axle oil seal number (this is a seal you do not want to get nos from a halftrack parts supplier)
new national part number       370036A
national premium seal number 380036A this is an unusual seal that locks to the shaft and the outer housing then spins within itself.

also try ebay with these numbers

motion industries has a pretty good site for information on these seals

I have just pulled the brake drum off of the drive rear axle.  I crossed referenced the Ord number (214924) with National Seal part number 5961.  Sure enough that numbered seal is what I found currently in place.  However the Parts Interchange thread reads as follows:

rear differential axle seals   (this is a seal you do not want to get nos)
national part number       370036A
national premium seal number 380036A this is an unusual seal that locks to the shaft and the outer housing then spins within itself.

What am I missing ? Which are correct?  Are there three choices? Paul

National Seal part number 5961 is an old part number. it crosses to the numbers above
also to other numbers as shown in this link

http://www.autopartoo.com/oem/partscrossinterchange.html?search=5961national

if you want one that looks exactly like the original then get the national 370036A

if you want the latest and greatest then get the national premium seal number 380036A

We use the National Premium seals on the Mack's I work on. There are two different versions of this seal. One that has the regular spring tension-er inside and one that uses a Teflon "bearing". The regular ones work well unless heated. They fail fast if the bearing is off just a bit or oil is a bit low. They also tend to seep if the breather is restricted. The Teflon one is a bit more expensive but it will last far longer and has a higher heat thresh hold.   Along the same topic, When we install new seals we replace the duel lock nut with a new Pro-torque nut. I have not checked to see if they have one that will fit the Half track yet but i am going to try to find out. These are a single nut with teeth cut on the inside. They are torqued in a sequence that sets the run out and a snap ring locks them in place. Takes just a minute to install and remove them and they are reusable.
