12th Armored Division Markings
There is a great wartime video with halftracks from the 12th AD rolling into Dillingen posted today on Facebook under the "White Half Track Enthusiasts" group site. The tracks have unique tactical markings - One of the site's members posted the following about the 12 AD's marking system.
"The 'Tombstone' is a unit marking for 12th Armored Division. I am some way towards sorting out which sign means what, The Tank Battalions have a 'Chevron'. The Armored infantry have a 'Cross'. Armored Engineers have a 'line'. Field Artillery use the 'Tombstone' (a stylised shell?) and Reconnaissance a 'Diamond'. Depending on the orientation of the sign tells you exactly what unit it is. The Circles and Squares accompanying the main sign tells you which company (and platoon?)."
Thought I would share here and see if anyone has seen something similar with regard to the 12th AD units.
