Front axle bearing race removal
« on: November 10, 2022, 04:19:28 PM »
Working on rebuilding my front axle and want to remove the bearing races for the differential that are pressed into each side of the housing. Of course there was a tool to do it, but I don't have that. Any pointers would be appreciated!

If the races are going to be replaced, you can tack weld a thick strap across the inside of it with a hole so you can attach a slide hammer or puller.

Yes, that's true. I could then just hammer them out with my rod from the other end like I did to get the seal out.  I think I was putting too much thought into it! Lol

Run a weld bead all the way around the inside and it will fall out.

I ended up just making a puller for my slide hammer. You will most likely need to install and remove the races to shim or grind them when setting the tooth engagement.  I can post a picture later of what i did. A few minutes with a grinder and drill is all it would take. Mine is ugly because i took 30 seconds with the plasma torch...

Well got them out. They still fought a little but finally came out. Thanks for the input.
