How to repair hinges
« on: March 26, 2023, 08:10:42 PM »
Many hinges have broken hinge pins and need them replaced; this is how I get the old ones out. First punch a hole in the end of a piece of flat steel then plug weld it to the end of the hinge pin. Heat the loop or both loops depending on where the pin is broken. Start working the pin loose and pry it up and out.
Flip the hinge over and do the other end of the pin. Sometimes the hinge pin is broken in 2 places and will leave a piece in the middle that you may need to saw in two to get the hinge apart, then heat and drive each piece out.
To reassemble I used 5/16"x 4" rivets trimmed to stick through a little less than an 1/8" then riveted the end with a ballpeen hammer. Have done a dozen this way successfully.
