two kinds of steering boxes
« on: October 17, 2010, 04:16:02 PM »
i have found that two different kinds of steering boxes are used and they are not interchangeable (unless you change the cast iron frame mounting bracket) the steering boxes off my m16 halftracks measure 2 3/8" on the round section that where it mounts in the frame bracket and the m2s i have looked at measure 2 1/8". the internals and arm are also different.

Steve,
I think the TA fits the scout car also. That is interesting. Do you know which halftrack you took the TA column from? I need to check the column on my M2A1 and see which one it is.

That is good to know. I checked my restored scout car that has the original column or at the very least it was installed in 1954 when it was rebuilt and it is a T not TA. I wonder if all the long frame halftrack used TA's or just certain ones? The one I removed from the m2a1 I'm restoring is a T also.
