Rear Idler and Bogie Wheel Bearings
« on: May 21, 2013, 07:20:16 PM »
Not sure what area to post this but think it fits here. I'm compiling a list of bearings to cross over for replacements. For the idler hub this is what I have:
In my hubs I have the following bearings and numbers

New Departure 3213

BCA 1213

Fafinir 213W

Parts book originally lists

MRC 213 S type A

OD 4.7244
ID 2.5591
width 0.9055

My Bearing house crosses over to:

Axis 6213

Timkin ??

For the top roller and bogie hub bearings the parts book lists

MRC 405 S type A

OD 3.1496
ID 0.9843
width 0.8268

I have not taken any of these assemblies apart yet so I have no other bearing numbers for the bogie hubs. I have a list for the front and rear axles I will post soon.

I used 3 of them, I brought the New Departure bearing to a bearing supply company and thats what they came up with. The dimensions of the bearing are also in the ORD9.

After looking into it, your right Gary,
Here is a list of interchangeable bearings right from skf for bogie/upper roller

DEEP GROOVE BALL BEARINGS
Consolidated Dimensions Approx. Interchange

SKF    d    D    B       FAF       STEYR/    FED     MRC       ND
                                            FAG
6405  25  80  21     405K     6405      1405   405-S    3405

NOTE on above bearings  FED/SKF have 7 balls per bearing, MRC/ND 6 balls per bearing.  Not sure if that really make a difference

Idler bearings         FAF         STEYR/       FED     MRC       ND
                                              FAG/SKF

I just installed my idlers with the New Departure 3213 bearings and the oil seals that were suggested. I drilled a few 1/16 holes in the seals to allow grease to escape.

Instead of drilling holes in them, put them in backwards. It will allow grease out and still help keep out water.

I thought about that Steve, and that would most definitely work. I did opt to put them in and drill due to the construction of the seal though. The ones I had were "open" on the inside, and would have trapped water/debris, and not protected the seal. I should have taken photos before I installed them to help explain...

Mark,

What oil seals were suggested in this post?  I must have missed it.  My idler bearings are good but I need new seals.

Thanks,
Paul

On the topic of the grease seals. I'm going to drill a second hole in the hubs and install these vents. Not to sure how well they will work but it seams to work on the Mack suspensions I have worked on.

Those would accomplish about the same thing as putting the seals in backwards.

Monkeypirate,

Did this work out for you?  I'm at the same stage right now and plan on installing the modern, thinner, seals.

Thanks,

Paul

Regarding the idlers. Mine turned very smoothly before mounting on the frame and do not leak grease. I have cranked the hell out of the turnbuckle and taken other steps to get the idler wheel to line up. Nothing has worked. It is still leaning forward, causing wear on the ring. Bad bearings ? Will new ones fix this ? Any advice is SUPER appreciated
