Modern Conveniences for halftracks
« on: December 22, 2014, 08:26:19 PM »
At the risk of appearing the opposite of a purist, what modern add ons are you guys using? I make sure what I do add is out of sight. Here is my list, I would do this to any military vehicle.

1) battery cut off switch. Mounted on bottom of battery tray. Reach under vehicle and flip switch. Security feature as well as making working on vehicle easier. Also when you have people in your vehicle it's better they cant start it.(kids)
2) electronic ignition, I won't go into the obvious benifits.
3) fuel cut off.  Mounted under drivers seat. I hate the wwii one, it's still there to look pretty.  I can only stand smelling gas while I drive for so long.
4) power point. Mounted under passenger seat. Bypassed kill switch to keep my phone charged.
5) modern fuel filter.

On mine I have the electronic ignition module, electric fuel pump, fuel filter/water separator (especially if you run ethanol fuels) and power steering is on my list if I can ever find a unit. I plan to put in a dummy BC-603 radio unit in with a modern radio in it.

Dont forget mirrors!! BTW Steves fuel filter setup is sweet, as him for a pic 8) I went for elec fuel pump and aftermarket fuel filter. Also as in the forum here, a modified air filter system!

The only modern ad on on mines is the electric fuel pump and a couple of inline filters, while my tank doesn't leak it does give off a steady supply of fine rust particles, so I have filter in front of the electric pump and another up by the engine to catch anything the first one misses, both of the filter are the old style that you can take apart and clean out,I keep a can of brake clean in the glove box in case it dies while out running around, I jump out remove the filters, blow them out and I'm on my way, I've cleaned my tank a dozen times and no matter how good it looks I still get rust!
As for mirrors, when I got my half track it had a CCKW mirror arm welded to the side of the of the cowl, I'm not sure when it was added but since it is a WW2 era mirror I just assume it was done by guys in the field when the realized you can't see squat out of these things! I also have a big clip on mirror that I clip up above the drivers seat for moving around the yard or driving into town, then when I'm in a parade or showing it I can just take it off and put it away out of site.
