welding on m2 armor
« on: June 22, 2013, 06:04:39 PM »
I am not a welder. Stupid question. On my M2, some one cut a half moon into the armor piece that is above the ammo box.. The cut is about 5 inches long and about 4 inches deep. They just cut a notch into the armor. Can a patch be welded back in?
Thanks.

The armor is only heat treated on one side. Your going to have to preheat the steel before you weld or it will crack.

Don,
Good info, I have some cracked armor that I would like to weld up.

Frank,
Let us know how you make out. Like you I just weld my own stuff. I have also heard to use stainless wire.

Pre-heat the area, use 309L Stainless to weld it, then peen the weld with a needle-gun to relieve the stress before it cools.
