Water pump grease?
« on: December 30, 2017, 08:06:56 AM »
Folks,

I'm in the process of re-building my water pump and TM 9-1711 states that the water pump must lubricated after every disassembly. Also says "the bearing housing is filled with special ball bearing lubricant". Are they saying to apply the water pump grease in the space between the rear and front bearings where the bearing spacer is?

Any clarification would be helpful.

Thanks,

Paul

I’m right behind you with my pump Paul so I’d like to know too. I first thought the manual meant the “housing” was the inside of the bearing unit where the balls live, which with modern greases I would think would be sufficient. But then it states “The ball bearings are similarly packed at assembly”. So the intent must be to fill the cavity between the bearings. I guess it couldn’t hurt and grease is cheap.

I looked this up in the Base Shop Data book and it doesn't mention filling the housing. It just says to repack the bearings with #2 Marfax bearing grease.

Thanks for the reply.  The photo is of the old shaft assy i removed and I was wondering why there was so much grease in the unit!! I think i'm going to pack the housing but i just need to find the proper grease (marfax)it requires.

Have a Happy New Year!
