What colors should my steering wheel & horn button be?
« on: May 16, 2018, 08:51:15 PM »
I bought an NOS horn button and it’s black with a Ross emblem. Most of the steering wheels I’ve seen are black, but my wheel is molded in green material. I assume it was supposed to stay green or they’d have made it from black material. Should my wheel be black or is a green wheel with a black button the way it was? Or should the button be green?

I would guess it would be on your choice. I personally like green for the steering wheel. The three halftracks I have all but one had green and the scout car has a  green wheel. Although I have a nos black one for future use. Hey cant be to picky when they are hard to find.  As far as the button, I have seen mostly black, especially with some sort of name plate. But again its what you like. Scan the internet and look at all the pictures you can and see which way you prefer.

I'm thinking I'll leave the wheel green and just run the button the way it is. I can always change it later. I'm making up a center insert with the Autocar logo to replace the Ross one. Thanks for the help Jeff.

No problem, I am curious in the autocar logo, as two of mine are autocars. Is it going to be a decal ? please post a picture if you have one. Thanks

There are probably other images, but on pg. 52 of Doyles U.S. Half Tracks, Part 2 there is a 1944 shot of the dash and steering wheel. Using a magnifying glass, the horn button definitely has an Autocar logo. I'm looking for a decal, but I haven’t had any luck. Their later standard logo is not exactly the same, but it’s close enough so I just googled Autocar logo images and tried printing one. I shrunk it to 35%, about 1-1/8” wide, and it came out OK, but it needs to be clearer. I’m going to check with Staples or someone with a higher-resolution printer to see if they can print one with finer lines. If I can't find the right logo and someone to make up a sticker or decal, I would just cut the paper one out and use common glue to stick it down and then coat it over with fishing rod wrap clear resin or similar. If it comes out, I’ll post a picture of it when it’s done. Meanwhile, I'll keep looking for the right logo and someone to make up a sticker or decal.

This is the later one:

Wonder what it would cost to have these laser engraved, or something similar. So you could then insert them in the cap that have the holes, that are missing the inserts.Just a idea.
