I made myself a speedometer!

Wanted a US speedometer and could not find one so bought an IH truck Stewart Warner speedometer on E-bay. It is very close to the same except for the face and no trip meter. The plan was to install the trip meter and face from my old rusty halftrack speedometer but could not get it apart, just too far gone. So, I just repainted the IH and installed a decal.
 The only other thing was it is a 70 mph speedometer and zero is in a different place so I needed to recalibrate it. I have a new French speedometer so spun it with my drill to get a speed, 27 mph is what I got. Adjusted the IH speedometer to read 27 mph with the drill so should be sort of close. Got to paint the ring yet. Will look better than the French gage.

That is the same thing i did with a spedo out of a REO. Looks good! How did you go about crimping the glass bezel down after rebuilding it?

Nice job. Whenever I rebuild a speedometer anymore I cut the steel case, and leave the glass intact if possible.

I used a pair of channel locks like this and rolled the crimp back around the shell, worked very well and was easy to do and get it tight. If you painted the ring first, I think you could use some cardboard against the ring and glass and not scratch it.

Good idea! I wasnt sure if crimping it lime that wod work or if the metal would work lose as you went around. Nice to know it works. You could probably throw a couple wraps of electrical tape around the jaw to protect the rings face and finsh. One more item i can go out and wrap up this week. Well done.

Its a smart idea to cut the housing and leave the glass/bezel intact as they seam to be hard to find. I managed to get a new glass and bezel or i wod have been worried taking mine apart.  That little pice of metal did not want to let go!
