Exhaust wrap?
« on: July 09, 2023, 04:09:01 PM »
so I've seen some other old threads about guys having problems with the gas boiling over and flooding the intake manifold after they shut their half track off and then causing a hard start issue, and ofcourse I'm having the same problem. so, with that said, I need to do something to get the heat away from the carb. has anyone actually wrapped the exhaust manifold or is it even possible? it looks pretty close to the intake manifold and idk if there's enough room to even get wrap in there. also, who sells new manifold gaskets upper and lower if I take the manifold off, and can I only take the exhaust manifold off or do I have to pull the intake manifold too?
thanks

Hello, I don't think there is enough room between the intake and exhaust manifolds for the wrap. Do you have the insulator between the carburetor and intake manifold? For me I also made a heat shield between the carburetor and intake manifold. the civilian White engines had this heat shield. Why the military didn't have it on the halftrack, I don't know.

I made a shield.  Stainless Steel 16 Ga sheet can be purchased from McMaster-Carr with one side polished.  Formed sides, polished side toward exhaust manifold to reflect heat.  Put 1/2" thick insulation on carb side and wrapped it with high temp aluminum tape used for water heater exhaust flues.  Makes a big difference, but doesn't fix the problem.  Really need to put another bakelite insulator between the shield and carb but you have to install longer carb studs.  Not about to try to remove rusted in studs from 80 year old manifold.  Not using crappy Calif gas would help alot too.

I'm looking into costs for the heat shield I made. As soon as I get a quote I will post it here.

Previous owner of my halftrack had same issue’s, installed an electric fuel pump and problem solved. I also wrapped exhaust pipe and muffler mainly to keep cab cooler.

yeah, the exhaust under the half track is all wrapped up nice on mine also, just need to do something in the engine bay to keep the heat away from the carb
