Steering wheel removal
« on: September 01, 2011, 11:14:14 AM »
Can someone post a picture of what the steering wheel attachment nut is supposed to look like ? (TM manuals I have don't give this level of pictorial detail, just stating 'remove nut').  I removed the horn button last night and all can see is a corroded mess with no evidence of where the nut is supposed to be (not even sure the nut is actually there).

At this point I'm assuming the steering shaft is likely unusable because the nut, steering wheel and shaft threaded portion have fused together in a corroded mess.

Thanks,

Phil.

I think I see a new steering shaft in your future :( I would have to say yor going to have cut the steering wheel away then maybe use a small cutoff wheel to try to cut whats left of the nut in half. If it is not completely welded to the shaft you might get lucky and knock the nut loose. Try some heat too.

Good luck Don G.

i think what i would do is use the end of a splined shaft and weld it to the end of yours.  if you look at my post here http://halftrackinfo.com/index.php?topic=195.0
these steering wheels are a great deal and look like the originals. then you also wouldn't have to machine the steering wheel.

The outer tube for the steering column (Ross) is the same one used on a M35 2.5 truck, just longer. I replaced our HT crushed column using a spare M35 tube trimmed off at the bottom. The little ball bearing thingy at the top is also the same.
Hope this helps.
