My M3A1 is up for grabs
« on: January 04, 2014, 03:51:24 PM »
Hello,

As I had mentioned previously I was contemplating selling my half track. Here's my situation. A buddy of mine is looking to sell a vehicle he owns. I'd like to buy it if possible which means my White would have to sell first. So long story short, if somebody want's her I'm finally mentally willing to part with it.

There it is shortly after I repainted it a few years back. The paint job isn't as good now but overall you get the picture. Some of the items in this shot won't be coming with it. The WS19 radio needs to say with me as well as the operating .30 cal. The cradle and tray associated with the mount go with the half track. I've also swapped the fuel cans over to the 5 Gal U.S. ones and removed the British cans. This photo is just a quick one to get you interested. I will provide more to any serious perspective buyers. We're finally going to get out of sub zero temperatures tomorrow (Sunday 1/5) so I plan on firing it up and taking video of what it sounds like if somebody's interested in that as well.
    A couple of our fellow halftrackinfo members have driven around in this thing. It's not a bad piece. It's not perfect though and there's a lot of work to do. Here's some of the basics;
1. It's registered as a 1943 White. I don't know if that's really the correct year though. The serial # on the frame appears
    to be M15A1-1014.
2. The rear brakes aren't hooked up, I stop with the front ones.
3. Only the left side fuel tank is hooked up. I believe it to be some kind of modern repro. When I shine a flashlight down
there I don't see any crusty black rubber so I'm guessing it must be a repro.
4. All of my lights work but the wiring's been done with modern plastic as needed so there's no original wiring harness on
    there.
5. There are a few oil weeps here and there but nothing major.
6. There's some definite wear on the drive sprockets.
7. The metal seems to be in pretty good shape all the way around. I'm assuming the front end is original stuff and the rear
is probably some kind of repro. I don't know for sure but that's my guess. That work was done by the person I bought it
from before me. Knowing how rare half tracks are with complete original armor, I'm guessing it's got a lot of repro
    parts.
8. The engine seems to run fine. I'm not a mechanic but I don't have any indication that there's any problems.
9. The starter was rebuilt this summer and the voltage regulator was '45 date NOS out of the box I put in back in June.
10. The tracks are 89 dated Israeli. I don't know what % wear they have but I can go out and measure the thickness on
the treads for any interested party. Boogie rubber looks pretty good to me too.
11. The most important part = price. I'm looking for $30k. Based on what I've seen out there, I think that's pretty fair. I
want this to be a quick sale so I am not trying to squeeze every potential dime out of the vehicle. I need it gone
       quickly.

I'll be happy to go into more detail with serious potential buyers but those are the basics. If you've got toy money and you're interested drop me a PM. I'm also going to post this over on the G503 to reach that audience as well.

Have a happy 2014,

Chris

Good luck w/ the sale Chris.  Sorry to hear you're moving on from tracks but someone will be happy.  I'd jump on it if I didn't have one in the middle of the restoration process...that's a deal!

Oh yeah, can't wait to see video of you driving around in that fresh powder!!!

Hello Dave and Tom,

To answer your question Dave, yes that's about the only thing left in NY that isn't illegal. As of now it is perfectly legit to register and drive it on the roads. Fully tracked would be a no-go in NY but as long as you're turning with your front wheels and the rear tracks are rubber, I've never heard of anyone having a problem registering them. Of course maybe I was just lucky.
Tom, I've moved the track from my Dad's house where you visited me, into my back yard. So that means I don't have the acreage to frolic in the snow. I can move it about 10 feet before I hit a tree here.  :-X  Right now there's too much salt on the roads to take it out on the main drag but having it here makes it more accessible in general for me so I guess there's give and take there.
We'll see what happens with the sale thing. I need to move this in about 30 days so I don't have long. If it goes it goes, if not, no big deal I'll still have a fun vehicle that's in pretty decent shape. I'd just like to down size to something a bit smaller if I could.

Regards,

Chris

Hiya,

Sorry I've been pretty much dead to conversation. We've just put our house back on the market and work has been absolutely nuts since about Jan 23rd. At any rate just a quick note that my half track sold. I guess that means I'm going to have to kick myself off this board. Funny, the actual commitment to buy was pretty quick in terms of when I listed it here and when the agreement was made, just took a while to come up with convenient schedule timing for the both of us for delivery.
I'd like to take a moment to thank everyone who's been so helpful here whenever I asked a stupid question. You folks are the greatest.
    Of course I couldn't give up the green fever so I turned the money over and bought this;

I know it's not as big and beautiful as the White but it's more manageable in terms of size and transport. Please don't hate me.
I'm supposed to pick it up sometime next month. A whole new virtual Pandora's box ready to open of new mechanical learning opportunities.

Regards,

Chris
