how many restored half-tracks in private hands?
« on: April 29, 2014, 05:14:18 PM »
I had some guys in this week picking up a car for transport, and of course the half-track caught their eye, especially the fake 50 up on the pulpit, he assumed it was a very rare vehicle, but it seems like there are actually quite a few running around still. Does anyone have a rough count or restored half-tracks in private hands in the US. Must be at least 100, I know the jeep and CCKW crowd have pretty good list on vehicles and serial numbers, is there a half-track data base?

There is one on G503, under the "track" forum.
One of the few, Frank USMC RET.

As you know that thread really does not address what is restored and running
I have asked the question before but got very little response.
Around here I can say there are 5 restored halftracks between Pueblo and colorado springs
Plus a few unrestored ones 3 at least
That is the ones I have seen but excluding  the army bases

My guess would be 100 or so in the USA in a restored state. Lot of guys have them that are not on the web. When I say restored I mean something that can be driven in a parade or parade ready. I think that might be on the low side too. I can see how most folks would think they are very rare and really they are. Just as an example 1969 Camaros are collectable to say the least and they made over 200 thousand of those. Since our group is kinda small its easy to forget how rare this stuff really is. Of course rare and desirable are sometimes very far apart.  ;D

Come on? Who wouldn't want a halftrack if they could have one? The only thing I would want more then a Halftrack is a DUKW, but only because its a bit more practical as a family car.

I suspect there are 200-300 runners in the US. I know of 4 complete tracks in the Nashville area and 4 parts tracks, one being restored.

I checked the serial number list and there are over 300 on it but some of those don't exist or are not in the USA so 200-300 sounds more like it. That's still pretty low.

You have to remember, not everyone gets on the G503 forum.  There are 5 running halftracks in the St. Louis area and only two of us get on the Gee.  I would say you could easily double the numbers on that list.  Then again that list also includes ones that are on display at museums, which may or may not be in running condition.

I wonder if there are more in Europe the north America, we left an awful lot of stuff over there and it didn't seem to get used up by miners and loggers like it did here?
