Info on 6BT Cummins swap
« on: June 05, 2014, 07:32:58 AM »
Hey guys,

I was curios if any one had any info on the 6bt cummins swaps I have heard rumors of? Seems pretty strait forward with an SAE3 bell. The cummins is about 4" shorter which should really help things. The best I can tell it is about the same weight as the 160AX. I have a few 150 HP non after cooled 6BT's, with a stroke 1/4 SHORTER than the White and a few less cubes, they come out to about 350 ft lbs of torque versus the 160AX at 320 ft lbs.

Thanks!

i read your post on steelsoliders
http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?74013-New-California-Halftrack-Project-Planning

first dont buy that halftrack in Illinois  unless you personally go and look at it first.
i have just seen one that came out of there and the frame was rusted so bad there where holes through it, but from the pics on the site you cant tell.

second there are more, better and cheaper halftracks here on the west cost and they get much less rust damage.
i still have about 10 halftracks in that shape , i could sell you one or im sure other members have them.

its an interesting project
i have seen a few done like that.

you can legally drive these on the road but one thing that hasn't been mentioned on the SS site is these have the worst blind spots of anything, you can put on side mirrors but its still a hazard on the roads. you should sit in one and see.

bellow is pics of some of my rough halftracks

Steve,

Nope, that was not me. We have an M16A1 with a quad mount that runs and drives great but we are working on an alternative track system with custom made rubber track and a diesel swap. Reliability and parts availability is key for my application.

That is a quite a collection of parts!

I believe that is what the Israelis did put diesels in them. I saw one up a the convention in 2008 that had a b series cummins in it looked like it belonged there. Have you read the track thread on the "G"? Any ideas could be helpfull as we will all need tracks sooner or later.

Don,

I've been on the "G", Read all 43 pages. They are quite clear that any tracks they would consider using would need to be EXACT replacements. To each their own. Ours wont be "exact" and will require replacing a few parts.

Some people will consider it "molesting" a vehicle, we consider it preserving the past for the future, you can always put the WWII style tracks back on if your lucky enough to even have them. A half track with alternative track is better than a half track with no tracks.

i think this is a great idea.

i saw one that had the 6BT diesel in it listed on ebay about 10 years ago.
if i remember correctly they didn't have the front driveline in so there may have been an issue there.

A half track with alternative track is better than a half track with no tracks.

keep us posted on your replacement track progress. it sounds like this has potential.
i really doubt the G tracks will ever get off the ground.

also i dont think this will help you but there is an m5 halftrack that is going to auction that the Israelis modified the rear track hardware on so they could run more power and higher speeds. they contacted me on the phone when they where removing the tracks and i couldnt help them because things where so different.

Very, very True!. But if anyone can get it done it would be Mike Keller. Everyone told him he couldn't build an M15 but danged if he didn't go and do it. So the more options we have the better.
